Induction and ceramic are not the same thing

In Spain any glass hob is called a "vitro". On a radiant ceramic hob the glass heats up and then heats the pan; on an induction hob the pan itself is heated, which is why it uses around 20% less energy. Induction needs cookware with a ferromagnetic base: if a magnet sticks to the base, it works.

Do I need to increase my contracted power?

Not necessarily. An induction hob has a high maximum power (6.6 kW on the Miele KM 7360 FL, 7.5 kW on the KMDA 7272-1), but it almost never uses all of it at once, and some let you limit their consumption. If your power limiter trips when you cook with other appliances on, it is worth having it checked. Our installation covers fitting the hob; if the electrical installation needs adapting, your electrician does it.

Gas in the Balearics: mains or bottled

The Redexis natural gas network reaches about 31 municipalities in Mallorca, plus Ibiza and Formentera, though not every street, and it does not reach Menorca; many country houses and village homes use butane or propane bottles. A gas hob leaves the factory set up for one type of gas, and the Miele KM 2034 G includes the injectors for bottled gas. The conversion is done by an authorised gas fitter and is not included in our installation. Bottled-gas installations are inspected every 5 years.

Hob with integrated extractor or cooker hood

An extractor in the hob captures fumes where they are produced and leaves the ceiling clear, which is useful for islands and open-plan kitchens. Here you will find the Miele KMDA models, the 80 cm Siemens and the BORA systems. The Miele KMDA 7272-1 FL, for example, works with external venting or recirculation and, in its best configuration, extracts up to 606 m³/h on intensive with 28 to 51 dB(A) in normal use. The extractor takes up the top of the cabinet: about 200 mm of height on the KMDA 7272-1 FL, and the usable depth of the drawers depends on the air outlet and the accessories.

Flush-fitted or surface-mounted

Miele FL hobs can be fitted flush or sitting on the worktop. Flush-fitted, the hob sits level with the worktop and needs a stepped rebate: on the KM 7360 FL, 600 x 500 mm inside and 624 x 524 mm outside. On stone worktops, the rebate is made by your stonemason.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about hobs

Can't find your question? Message us on WhatsApp and we'll get back to you.

Are ceramic and induction hobs the same thing?

No. Both are glass, but a radiant hob heats the glass and an induction hob heats the pan directly. Induction uses around 20% less energy.

Which pans work on induction?

Those with a ferromagnetic base, ideally flat, thick and the size of the zone. Try a magnet: if it sticks to the base, it works.

Do I have to increase my contracted power?

Not necessarily. The hob's maximum power is almost never used in full, and some hobs let you limit it. If your power limiter trips often, have your electrician check it.

Induction or gas?

Gas works with bottles where there is no mains supply and gives you a flame for wok cooking: the Miele KM 2034 G has a 4.2 kW wok burner and GasStop, which cuts off the gas if the flame goes out. Induction is more efficient.

Does natural gas reach my home in Mallorca?

The Redexis natural gas network reaches about 31 municipalities in Mallorca, plus Ibiza and Formentera, but not every street and not Menorca; check with Redexis. If you have no mains gas, the alternative is a butane or propane bottle.

Does a hob with an integrated extractor work well?

It captures fumes at pan level and works with external venting or recirculation. The Miele KMDA 7272-1 FL reaches 606 m³/h on intensive, with 28 to 51 dB(A) in normal use, depending on how it is installed.

What is a flush-fitted hob?

A hob that sits level with the worktop. It needs a rebate in the worktop, made by your stonemason; Miele FL hobs can also be surface-mounted.

Can the hob connect to the hood?

On some models, yes: the hood switches on and adjusts itself according to the hob (Con@ctivity on Miele and the equivalent function on Siemens).
